Lighten the load of teaching with the calming power of yoga and the balance of good nutrition.
I'm Shandre.
I'm a foundation phase school teacher living and working in Shanghai, China. I've spent over 10 years teaching at primary level and the last 5 years teaching yoga and nutrition.
I'm also a boy mom, and wife to a man who makes the perfect cup of tea. We've lived in Asia on and off for 14 years teaching and exploring this side of our beautiful planet.
Is stress taking away your love for teaching?
Prioritize your mental and physical health so you're not only a calmer educator but also a less reactive person at home.
Challenging student behaviours, tight deadlines, lack of support and a heavy workload is just some of the obstacles today's educators face.
All that stress can overshadow all the passion you have for the profession. No wonder so many teachers decide to leave. Understandably so, you can only take it for so long before you burn out.
Unfortunately, very few educators are taught how to take care of their health.
As the nurturer you are, your priority is always your students.
My mission is to provide you with the tools you need to have a teaching career you love, while prioritizing your health as you care for your students and loved ones.
The Four Pillars
Asana - yogic movement
Yoga has a long history of preparing the body for meditation through many different poses. This extensive (and still growing) list can be modified for any type of body from beginner to advanced. Asana builds strength, improves flexibility, mobility, as well as keeps internal organs and joints healthy. Asana removes that heavy stagnant energy synonymous with stress.
Pranayama - breathwork
We breath everyday but the practice of yoga teaches that the breath is a mirror into your inner state. Not only that, it is the bridge that can help you alter and modify the way you feel and respond to your external stimuli. When you are angry, your breath might become shallow and rapid. Sometimes we even hold our breath without thinking during times of anxiety. By learning to harness the breath, you can calm your nervous system and choose consciously.
Meditation - focus & self-awareness
Meditation grounds us in the only true moment of life we have - this moment right now. We waste so much of our lives replaying the past or fearing a future that hasn't yet happened that we miss the beauty of our lives. It's in that blink of an eye that our children grow into adults, our youth and health fade and our lives are spent doing things we never thought we'd be doing. Meditation is a practice. It is a skill that takes consistent effort to reap the rewards: More patience. Stronger intuition. Greater awareness of self and others.
Diet - eat well to be free
Physically, emotionally and mentally, the food we eat either helps us thrive or simply survive. As a society, we can no longer ignore that food has an indelible impact on our mood and well-being. There are foods that perpetuate the unending rollercoaster of stress and anxiety and there are foods and herbs that help to naturally calm and restore your nervous system. It's science.
